By This course examines the history of American involvement in Afghanistan, beginning with the Cold War when the U.S. used Afghanistan as a test case for brand spanking new fashions of political modernization and economic growth. We will go on to debate the U.S. support for Islamist political events during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan within the Nineteen Eighties and the consequent rise of the Taliban, and the role of Afghanistan in the September 11th attacks and the “War on Terror” that adopted. The course will conclude with a consideration of the impact and legacy of the twenty years of nation-building and social reform carried out by the United States since September 11.
